Fence posts and bays
Posts and bays for a straight run at a spacing you choose.
Formula. posts = length divided by spacing, rounded up, plus one; bays = posts − 1
Assumptions
- The run is straight. Corners need an extra post that this count does not add, so measure each straight run on its own.
- The default spacing is 2.4 metres. A length that is not an exact number of bays still gets a post at each end, so 20 metres at 2.4 metres is 10 posts and 9 bays. The last bay is shorter than the spacing.
- Gates are not counted. A gate replaces a bay and usually needs its own posts.
- This does not price materials or say what your neighbour should pay.
